EHHS Professors Present at Annual E2 Conference

Four EHHS professors presented recently at the 7th annual Education Elevated (E2) Conference, a virtual gathering that brings together ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ community members and others to share knowledge, skills, and teaching strategies that elevate students’ learning by leveraging technology in service of effective teaching. This year's conference featured two keynote addresses and some two dozen sessions.

Professor Chia-Ling Kuo, Ph.D. and program coordinator for the Educational Technology program, presented with Elena Novak, Ph.D., associate professor in Education Technology. Their presentation, "Creative Computing in Preservice Teacher Education," explains how they developed a creativity-enhancement intervention in an online creative computing instructional module that introduces preservice elementary teachers to the ideas of creativity in the context of computing education.

Professor Joanne Caniglia, Ph.D.,  presented "Technology Supporting Collaboration and Greater Teacher Preparation," which described how two preservice classes (Secondary Mathematics Methods and Teaching Mathematics to Children with Special Needs) were asked questions based on a lesson plan and a fictional student’s strengths, needs, IEP goals, and a particular learning disability created by ChatGPT. Results showed that most math and special education preservice teachers identified mathematical content barriers aligned to IEPs.

Associate Professor Lisa Testa, Ph.D., noted that students use AI all the time and instructors can bury their heads in the sand or learn from and with students on how to use AI to enhance learning. Her presentation, "Active AI in the Classroom: Modeling and Teaching Responsible AI Use," provided a philosophy of modeling AI use that is pragmatic and ethical while also enhancing students' efficacy in writing and thinking.
